School Champions

What are Takahe school champions?

They’re kids like you who have become passionate about saving this endangered species and are finding ways to raise money!

Mitre 10 Takahe Rescue just discovered recently that school champions exist! Moe Gath and Renzo Makoni of Fendalton Primary in Christchurch wrote to us and told us about how excited they were to save the takahe after they learnt all about it in their class.

Congratulations Moe and Renzo – you raised $46.00 which is a fantastic amount for a school food stall.

The boys food stall had popcorn and cakes and they even went to the trouble of creating Takahe icing on all the little cakes – we thought the red legs and a bright red beak made the icing look really delicious! After they had counted all the money they each wrote a letter to Phil Tisch who is head of the Department of Conservation’s Takahe Recovery Group to let him know about all the things that they had learnt.

Learning about Takahe relies on enthusiastic teachers so we’d like to thank you teachers too for providing all the extra encouragement.

If you or your class want to try some fundraising ideas to help save Takahe, please contact Natalie Foote on 09 442 2791 and you might end up featured on this page too!

Letters from Students:

Hi

Today our family went to the Maungatautari Reserve. I saw Takahe, Kaka, a Bellbird and a Kiwi. We were able to stroke the Kiwi because they were changing its transmitter. After changing the kiwi's transmitter, they weighed the two Takahe. They have two breeding pairs and one pair have a chick but we didn't get to see the chick.

I was really excited when I saw the Takahe, they sort of look like the one I paper mache'd at school in 2008. They are bigger than I expected they would be. The man coaxed them onto the scale using food. The male hopped on no trouble but the female was a little more wary! So she took some persuading!

The Kiwi feathers felt strange, they didn't feel hard or soft.

It was really cool seeing the Takahe and touching a Kiwi. Great to see our native birds alive and well.

From Olivia Simmonds (nearly 10) and family.
