Art Winner Visits Takahe In Wild

February 2009

Last week the 2008 Takahe Rescue Kids Art competition winner – Torie Enticott, took her prize winner’s trip to Te Anau with her family, to visit the endangered takahe.

Torie’s mum told us;

Phil, Nick and Glen from DOC looked after us very well and taught us a lot. We were impressed with the way in which Nick located and then led us to the wild Takahe pair we saw by Lake Ormond a short walk from the DOC hut in the Murchison valley. This was made even more exciting by the fact that the Takahe took their time to appear from behind the tussock, though we could hear them and see the tussock moving for some time before they were visible to us.

At the breeding centre Torie and Amelia were able to feed the chicks with the Blue glove and wooden beak – they loved that! The highlights for Torie were: feeding the Takahe chicks, the helicopter ride and seeing Takahe in the wild. Both Torie and her sister Amelia also loved swimming in the pool at the hotel and eating in the restaurant.

Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to enjoy such a unique experience. We all feel extremely fortunate to have had such an experience and also to have been able to share it together.”

We’re so glad you enjoyed the trip Torie! Look out for the art competition launch this September and you too could be in with a chance to experience this unique endangered bird in it’s natural habitat and to meet the people who work so hard for it’s survival.
